The Gard department
The Gard department
At the heart of a department with multiple contrasts, rich in landscapes, history and know-how
The Gard offers a territory of great diversity, where preserved nature, exceptional historical heritage and gastronomic traditions blend harmoniously. It is a department that can be discovered as a succession of contrasting landscapes, from the Mediterranean coast to the Cévennes reliefs, passing through cultivated plains and perched villages.
  • In the high Cévennes massifs, Mont Aigoual, the highest point of the department, invites to hiking, to panoramas over sea and mountains and to contemplation of the landscapes.
  • To the south, the Camargue of the Gard blends marshes, lagoons, birds including flamingos, horses and traditions; a wild and preserved territory, which gives the Gard a Mediterranean and natural face.
  • Heritage is omnipresent, with major sites that testify to the richness of its history, such as the Pont du Gard, the arenas of Nîmes, the Maison Carrée or the Tour Magne, easily accessible on foot for the latter, only 1km from the house.
  • Culture finds a generous place there, supported by emblematic festivals - concerts in the arenas of Nîmes (with an often prestigious programme), Feria, sound and light shows -, living traditions and a way of life deeply rooted.
  • Gastronomy reflects this local identity: renowned wines, oils and local products, generous cuisine shaped by agricultural diversity and by the proximity of the Mediterranean.
The Gard thus reveals itself as a land of contrasts and complementarities: a territory where one can, depending on the desire, go from a mountain hike to a sea swim, discover exceptional ancient sites or enjoy a way of life marked by traditions, nature and conviviality.
The beaches of the Gard
The beaches of the Gard
Less than an hour’s drive from a preserved and diversified coastline, endowed with some of the finest beaches in France
Less than an hour’s drive from Nîmes, the Mediterranean coast reveals itself as a preserved, diverse and luminous territory, where some of the most beautiful beaches in the south of France stretch out.

On the Languedoc coast, the transition from land to sea happens slowly, naturally, respectfully. One must cross the lagoons, their string of ponds and the dune cordon to reach the Mediterranean shore, in a landscape of soft and changing lines.

To the west, the Thau lagoon - one of the largest lagoons in France - forms a true inland sea, a spectacular place for practising water activities. On its shores, the oyster beds draw a delicate geometry on the water. Shellfish farming has long had its great traditions there, embodied by the famous Bouzigues oyster, renowned for its finesse and flavour. The lagoons of the Languedoc also form a sanctuary of biodiversity, a natural refuge where flamingos, herons and migratory birds move with the seasons.

Further south, the coastline of the Gard reveals a discreet and charming shore, between blond dunes, salt marshes and marine horizons. Here, the sea is experienced as close to nature as possible, far from the major seaside resorts, in a soothing and luminous atmosphere. From Espiguette beach, an immense stretch of wild sand with an end-of-the-world feel, to the livelier shores of Le Grau-du-Roi, this preserved coastline retains a singular identity. The dunes border the salt marshes, the Camargue horses cross paths with fishermen’s huts, and the sunsets blaze across the horizon. One comes here to swim, stroll by the sea, breathe in the sea air… and savour the Mediterranean in its most authentic form.
